Digital I/O Board

digital I/O board

Introduction to QED Digital I/O Board

Versatile Isolated I/O Simplifies Automation

The QED Digital I/O Board provides an off-the-shelf solution for automation and control of industrial equipment. Compared to traditional PLC's, the QED solution delivers superior performance at low cost.

Everything You Need For Programmable Machine Control

The QED Digital I/O Board delivers 18 heavy duty isolated inputs and outputs to enable direct control of industrial equipment. Eight isolated outputs let you sink up to 3 amps and switch signals up to 60 volts DC. You can control motors, solenoids, heaters, valves, lamps and other actuators under computer control. Inductive loads are no problem; the required transient suppression circuitry is right on the board. The optical isolation allows the QED Board to control equipment running from widely varying power supplies in industrial environments.

Two relay outputs let you control heavy duty AC loads. Controlling inductive loads is a snap - a unique transient suppression circuit combines surge clamping with RC snubbing for reliable low noise switching.

Reading contact closures and digital signals in industrial environments is easy: just connect the board to the signal source and use the pre-coded routines to read the logic levels of the signals. The isolated inputs can monitor signals up to 50 volts.

To control standard industrial control modules (made by Opto-22, Gordos, Greyhill, etc.) simply connect the Digital I/O Board's logic header to 16-channel industry standard control module boards via a 34 pin ribbon cable.

The Digital I/O Board also provides an easy way to add TTL/CMOS compatible digital ports to the QED Board. Each Digital I/O Board adds one 8 bit input port and one 8 bit output port to the QED system. These memory-mapped ports are easy to use and provide versatile expansion of your system's capabilities.

Specifications

High Current Outputs

  • Each of eight open-drain MOSFET outputs can sink up to 3 amps at 60 volts DC with over 2000 volts isolation.
  • Onboard snubber diodes allow control of inductive DC loads.
  • The eight outputs are organized as four pairs; each pair shares a common ground and snubber connection.

Relay Outputs

  • Two relays can drive AC and DC loads at up to 3 amps.
  • The single pole single throw relays handle resistive loads at up to 380 VDC and inductive loads at up to 125 VAC.
  • Onboard snubber circuits allow inductive AC or DC loads to be controlled.

Field Connector

  • The isolated high current MOSFET outputs, high voltage inputs, and relay outputs with their associated ground, snubber and pull-up signals are brought out to a 40 pin dual row header.
  • One or two Digital I/O Boards can be plugged into the QED Industrial Control System backplane board, providing a direct interface to the QED Board as well as convenient screw terminal connections for the field signals.

High Voltage Inputs

  • Eight optically isolated inputs monitor voltages of 3 to 50 VDC with over 2000 volts isolation.
  • Each input can be optionally pulled up with an onboard resistor to detect switch closures.

QED Interface

  • A 40 pin header connects the Digital I/O Board to the address/data bus of the QED Board.
  • Up to four Digital I/O Boards can be interfaced to a QED Board.
  • Each Digital I/O Board has a unique two-bit address that is selected by a pair of onboard jumpers.
  • The Digital I/O Board can be powered by the QED Board.

Logic Level Connector

  • The Digital I/O Board can be used to add 8 TTL/CMOS compatible inputs and 8 outputs to the QED Board.
  • These 16 active-low logic-level signals and their associated grounds are brought out to a 34 pin dual row header.
  • The logic level connector provides a direct connection to standard 16-channel industrial input/output modules to monitor and control AC and DC devices.

Digital I/O Board

Delivers 8 high current isolated MOSFET outputs, 8 high voltage isolated inputs, and two relay outputs to control industrial equipment. Up to four Digital I/O Boards can be connected to each QED Board via the address/data bus, and the QED Industrial Control System backplane can accommodate one or two Digital I/O Boards. A separate onboard connector brings out 16 logic level signals with an industry standard pinout, so this board can be used to add simple digital I/O or to interface standard industrial I/O modules to any QED system. Each Digital I/O Board can drive 2 unipolar stepper motors at up to 3 Amps per phase. Pre-coded software running on the QED Board controls the stepper motors at up to 1000 full- or half-steps per second.
